We have been exposed to radiation! Does that make us radioactive? Does this cause harm to our bodies? Is this normal? Should we be exposed to radiation not naturally occurring in our environment? Neither are we experts in radiation poisoning, or in allopathic medicine. However we have an amazing brain that contains a portion of it fully dedicated to logic and common sense. So we will be using this part of our God given abilities to decide whats good and not good for our bodies in this article.
This became more of a concern of ours when years ago there where reports in the news of CAT Scan machines had been mis-calibrated, causing dangerous doses of radiation exposure to trusting patients. In fact some patients had been exposed to 40% more radiation in a single scan than they should have been*. Lawsuits against GE and other manufactures are in process as a result of physical harm from these scans. Hopefully this is not a norm, and a valuable lesson was learned on the proper calibration and maintenance of radiation based medical equipment.
According to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine last year, CT scans alone will cause nearly 30,000 unnecessary cancer cases (about 2 percent of cancer cases), which will lead to about 14,500 deaths.
But wait, there’s more bad news.
While 30,000 cancer cases is a large number, a New England Journal of Medicine study from 2007 estimated that overuse of diagnostic CT scans may cause up to 3 million excess cancers over the next 20 to 30 years.
For those slow on math that is 1,000 X more deaths over the next 25 years.
David Brenner of Columbia University, lead author of the study, told USA Today:
“About one-third of all CT scans that are done right now are medically unnecessary … Virtually anyone who presents in the emergency room with pain in the belly or a chronic headache will automatically get a CT scan. Is that justified?
If the logic center of your brain is raising flags right now, it’s for good reason. There are other concerns about radiation exposure. Not my goal to create fear here, but to establish reasonable cause to understand why you would want to take some precautions.
The Japanese earthquake of March 11th, 2011 has taught the world that nuclear power plants are vulnerable to natural disasters as well as from years of use that have caused deterioration and weakness. Of the 104 nuclear power plants in the US six are identical to the damaged Fukushima plant. 17 others are very similar and several are close to major earthquake faults. It is possible that the “giant” that has been sleeping since the days of the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.
“By itself, the Japanese tsunami was a horrendous, almost unimaginable event, one that reminds us that even the most highly developed nations can be left all but helpless when the full forces of nature get unleashed. But what happened at Fukushima had a more profound lesson: that technological hubris, self-serving bureaucracy, lack of transparency and a host of other human failings always have the capacity to take a bad situation – and make it worse. Unfortunately, Japan will be reminded of this lesson every day for decades to come.
Now lets consider the information presented at the October 2013 North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) annual meeting.
The Researchers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada confirmed that the radioactive plume from Fukushima is indeed reaching the shores of Canada and the United States – and was detected at least six months ago – carried both in the ocean surface water and the atmosphere on similar but slightly different courses.
In a presentation titled “Communicating the forecasts, uncertainty and consequences of ecosystem change,” (read here: http://www.pices.int) the Canadian researchers gave evidence that the bulk of radioactivity from Fukushima is shifting almost entirely from the western portion of the North Pacific (Japan) to the eastern portion (North America) over the course of the next five years. As of 2012, it had already reached the central region of the Pacific Ocean, and a previously unpublished map shows that, as of 2013, it had reached the shores of Alaska and British Columbia, with the most intense area of the plume yet to arrive.
All models point to increased radiation from here on out. Just how bad it will get remains to be seen, but red flags were raised last week when health officials dismissed concerns about readings taken in San Francisco and posted on the Internet that showed levels as high as 150 counts-per-minute – about five times higher than normal background radiation levels.*”
Most people we talk with, want options to help protect themselves from any kind of exposure outside of the norm. Not the new norm, but the old norm, before when radiation exposure was solely from our environment naturally occurring.
So what do we do? Here are some steps we take to combat some of the negative effects of our environment:
- Unless it’s an emergency, XRAY’s, CAT Scan’s, MRI’s and they like are a last resort. We do not believe in routine, automatic or frequent exposure, no matter how small the amount. We are already exposed to radiation from other sources and not willing to add to it the effects.
- We combat negative affects of our environment and exposure to toxins/radiation by removing sources of toxins/radiation from our bodies. No chemical cleaners in the homes (our bodies are already working hard enough don’t need to combat chemicals too), using our cell phone’s away from our bodies not holding it against our head when possible. We actually do not prefer to fly, we prefer to drive, but exposure to radiation is higher when flying, etc..
- Support our bodies healing abilities by considering what we put in, on and around our bodies. Aiming to consume 50-75% raw vegetables and fruit. Is the food, personal care product, or item as close to the source as possible the way it was designed? For example, would it be better to juice real juice at home or buy a “fruit juice” that has been mass-produced with added ingredients? The fish, meat or seaweed I buy, is it from Japanese coast? The fish supplements we take, where is the fish sourced from? (Not the Pacific coast)
- Exercise, research is showing that just 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day (defined as brisk walking) can actually decrease your risk of cancer and other diseases by a significant amount?
